HOW DO YOU SPELL
HUMAN?—D-U-M-B!
Have you ever marveled at the stupidity of some people? You may be too polite to answer that question, but I bet you have! And, if you were really the open and honest type, I bet you might even say that there has been a time or two when you marveled at your own "monument to the thinking impaired." Seems to me that we all have those times, even if, on a good day we're capable of putting our shoes on the right feet, and walking and chewing gum at the same time.
Science tries to tell us that the reason humanity is at the top of the food chain is because we've had the smarts to outsmart all the competition. Such theories may look half-way plausible on paper, but when you throw some flesh, pants and a shirt on them, the theory drops down big time on the realm of the possibilities chart.
The fact is, the only reason humanity is tops in anything is because Someone put us there, namely the Lord Jesus, our Creator (John 1:3). Unconvinced? Let me recount some of the really dumb things people have done as recorded by various Newspapers in North America:
An unidentified man, using a shotgun like a club to break a former girlfriend's windshield, accidentally shot himself to death when the gun discharged, blowing a hole in his gut.
Near Mineral Wells, Tex., three men who were attempting to steal copper wire off live electrical lines were electrocuted to death.
Ken Charles Barger, 47, accidentally shot himself to death in Newton, N.C., when, awakening to the sound of a ringing telephone beside his bed, he reached for the phone, but grabbed instead a Smith & Wesson .38 Special, which discharged when he drew it to his ear.
Finally, my personal favorite: poacher Marino Malerba shot a stag standing above him on an overhanging rock and was killed instantly when it fell on him.
I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. We're not too bright are we? I myself have made a few brain-dead blunders; like the time I thought it would be neat to put a rifle shell in a vise and hit it with a hammer; or the time I decided to take a short cut to the second floor of a construction site and climbed up the outside of the scaffolding only to have it fall down around me scattering concrete blocks and staging inches from my head. So how do we spell humanity? D - U - M - B!
Ok, I've recounted some pretty dumb stories for you, and you're probably saying, "Wow, how could anyone be that dumb? How could anyone lose their life, or put themselves at risk by behaving in such stupid ways? Let me tell you-- it's easy! I would even say that it comes naturally. But the truth is, we haven't even discussed the dumbest way people put their lives on the line. You mean something's dumber than shooting a stag and letting it fall on you? Yep! Do you want to know the dumbest and, incidentally, most common ways to put your life in danger? Here are a few:
Thinking that there's no God.
Thinking that there is no coming judgement.
Thinking that there's lots of time to think about the possibility of perhaps getting around to the idea that you should start considering that maybe it's time to get serious about spiritual things.
Thinking that there is no such thing as sin, and/or that the concept of sin changes with the tide of societal acceptability.
Thinking that you're good enough to get into Heaven without Jesus' help.
And, the dumbest thing humanity can ever do--reject Jesus Christ, the Way the Truth and the Life--our only means of eternal life and forgiveness.
Think about it for a minute. God loved us enough to give us a way to be forgiven, a way to be made whole and find fulfilment and happiness. And, He did it by sending His Son to die on our behalf. Yet, we thumb our noses at such an amazing free gift of love? I'm sure you've heard about "Dumb and Dumber." Well, the rejection of God's plan of salvation isn't dumb, or dumber, it's the dumbest! I'd rather sleep with a loaded .38 Special next to my bed than make that mistake! What about you?
